Christmas 2020

Christmas is Coming

It will come as no surprise to tell you all that we will not be holding a Christmas party this year.

HOWEVER, the highlight of our year is seeing the children visit Santa SO instead of you coming to us we are going to come to you!! Over the weekend of the 12th/13th December 2020, Santa and his Elves will come and visit you on your doorstep. They will deliver a present for your child with Down Syndrome and a small treat for their siblings.

How do I get a visit from Santa?

  • Complete the form below
  • Once the deadline has passed, we will allocate the day/time slots. We will send you your time slot in a letter which will also include magic dust for your child and instructions for the day.
  • As you can imagine this is going to be tricky to get the logistics right, as we cover a wide area, and therefore we will only be able to visit a certain number of children over the weekend. We will do our very best to accommodate everyone and will let you know if we are not able to offer a visit.
  • A visit will only last for 20mins at the maximum; this is so we can visit as many children as possible. Demand may mean we can spend longer or possibly a shorter time with you and your letter will confirm this.
  • Time slots once set will be fixed, we will not be able to change them.
  • A visit will cost £10 per family, to cover the cost of the letter, the magic dust and a present.
  • You must have a child/young person with Down Syndrome and be on our database to be eligible for a visit and reside in the areas that we cover.

 On the day

We will text you just before our visit so that you watch out for us.

  • Santa and the Elves will leave the present/s on the doorstep for you to pick up. We will not be able to come inside your house.
  • Santa and his Elves will have sanitised their hands before each individual visit and will adhere to social distancing measures.
  • We will encourage the taking of photos and videos, but SOCIAL DISTANCING measures MUST be adhered to, and therefore your family will NOT be able to touch/hug Santa or the Elves. We will have a prop in between your child and Santa to help with this. Unfortunately, we will NOT be able to take the photo/video ourselves.
  • A visit will only last for 20mins at the maximum; this is so we can visit as many children as possible. Demand may mean we can spend longer or possibly a shorter time with you.

If we are unable to provide the visit due to social distancing measures/lockdown/self-isolation, we will notify you of our alternative plan.

 Deadline 16th November 2020

COVID-19 We are Doing our Bit in Somerset! https://www.upsanddowns.net/covid-19-we-are-doing-our-bit-in-somerset/ Tue, 22 Sep 2020 11:04:30 +0000 https://www.upsanddowns.net/?p=18665

COVID-19

We are Doing our Bit in Somerset!

With thanks to the Somerset Community Foundation and their COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund.

Within weeks of the national lockdown in March, the Somerset Community Fund pulled out all the stops to ensure funding became available to support those grassroots level organisations across Somerset to do their bit in helping the Somerset community survive and thrive during these testing times.

Thanks to two funding awards supported by Wessex Water and the latest, the National Emergencies Trust, we have been able to offer an intensive service to all our registered families and Somerset schools where there is a child who has Down Syndrome.

Our families have really appreciated being contacted individually over the last few months; as well as continuing to support with issues and concerns in relation to Down Syndrome, we have been on hand to discuss the other multiple mounting challenges which have arisen as a result of the pandemic.

Ensuring we are very much on hand for our Somerset schools, we hope we have made a difference in supporting schools to manage the new challenges as they welcome their SEN pupils back into what we know, are very testing circumstances.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Somerset Community Foundation, for their quick response in making this fund available. We feel we have been able to make a significant difference with this funding – a fence at the top of the cliff rather than the emergency services at the bottom!

Picnic in the Park

Sherborne Youth Club

Sherborne youth group enjoyed a socially distanced Picnic in the park on July 16th.

It was organised by their wonderful leader, Sandra Consalvey, and everyone was pleased to be able to come and meet up with their friends after so long in lockdown.

The weather was lovely and each family bought their own picnic and also enjoyed some treats provided by Sandra.

Weston-super-Mare Bees

During the COVID 19 shutdown, our Weston Super Mare group have stayed in touch and busy via zoom sessions. These have been run by our new team member Catherine, who has set challenges each week for the young people to complete.

One week they had activities about bees, and then Catherine was able to show them inside a real beehive kept by her partner Byron.

The session took them through her garden, and they were able to see all the different sections of the hive and the bees inside.

Catherine hopes the honey crop will be good this year so everyone can taste some when our sessions resume.

21 Up Challenge https://www.upsanddowns.net/21-up-challenge-ups-and-downs-southwest/ Mon, 20 Jul 2020 23:01:35 +0000 https://www.upsanddowns.net/?p=18461

21 Up Challenge

Fancy a challenge?

Could you raise £21 for us?

The Covid-19 situation has meant that many of our fundraising events have been cancelled this year and this leaves us without vital funds to commit to any Family Events in 2021 and beyond. We also recognise that in the coming month’s grants are going to be hard to obtain as money is directed to those in frontline services.

With this in mind, we are launching our 21 Up Challenge!!! This challenge is a twist which incorporates our 21 Up Team Challenge

What is the challenge: You choose a challenge which includes 21, here are some suggestions:

  • Walk/run 21 miles in the 21 days
  • Climb the stairs 21 times every day
  • Eat 21 cream crackers in 21 minutes
  • Carry 21 peas on a spoon around your garden 21 times!!

How much do I need to raise: £21 is the minimum target

How do I set up a fundraising page: Click here to set up either a JustGiving or Virgin Giving page

We encourage you to share on social media your fundraising page and challenge details with your friends and family using #21UpChallenge.

You can also let us know how you are doing on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

This challenge can be taken on by anyone, we just ask that you register your challenge so that we can see how you are getting on.

How do I register: Please complete the form below.
