They Came, They Quizzed, They Conquered

Barclays Virtual Quiz Night

Did you know that the national animal of Scotland is a unicorn?

Just one of the quizzical questions that came up during the Bridgwater Barclays Virtual Quiz Night, all in aid of Ups and Downs Southwest.

Supported by over 20 people across the Barclays network, their friends and family, we stormed our way through 8 rounds in total with questions from football to film, musicals to pictures of moustaches.  With prizes up for grabs, the competition was hot.

Through entry fees and additional on-line donations, some from our own families we support, the event raised a staggering £693.  Barclays Bank will now match fund this amount pound for pound bringing the total to £1386.

We are thrilled with the amount raised and would like to thank all the staff at the Bridgwater Barclays branch for choosing Ups and Downs Southwest to benefit and for giving up their time so freely to support this brilliant evening.

Fancy a Challenge https://www.upsanddowns.net/fancy-a-challenge-ups-and-downs-southwest/ Wed, 22 Apr 2020 16:18:20 +0000 https://www.upsanddowns.net/?p=18193

Fancy a Challenge

Fancy a challenge?

The 2.6 Challenge has been set up to help charities across the country survive the next few months as we adjust to the way the Covid-19 pandemic has affected us.

The cancellation of thousands of events and the loss of billions in income through fundraising events has meant that many charities have had to reduce or stop services at a time when they are needed the most. Our charity alone has had to cancel 5 events which would have raised much needed funds to pay for our family events.

What is the 2.6 Challenge?

From Sunday 26th April we are asking you to complete the 2.6 Challenge by participating in any activity you like using the number 26. For example, running 2.6 miles or skipping 26 times. For more information and ideas click here https://www.twopointsixchallenge.co.uk

You can take part no matter what your age or ability is, just remember to practise the social distancing rules. Once you have chosen your #TwoPointSixChallenge, head to the ‘donate or fundraise’ buttons and choose Ups and Downs Southwest as your chosen charity, make your donation and then complete your challenge.

We would LOVE to see your photos/videos of you completing your challenge.

Use the hashtags #TwoPointSixChallenge #Doyourthing #UDSW  You can share them on our Facebook and Twitter accounts or email them to michelle@upsanddowns.net for us to share.

We know that it is a really difficult time for everyone, any donation you are able to make will make a difference to us. This Saturday would have been our Easter party, why not donate the money you would have spent on refreshments and a raffle ticket to our cause.

Have fun completing the challenge and from all of us at Ups and Downs Southwest thank you for your support.

Little Lotto Supporters https://www.upsanddowns.net/little-lotto-supporters/ Mon, 30 Mar 2020 08:43:20 +0000 https://www.upsanddowns.net/?p=18099

To all our lovely supporters who are signed up to our Little Lotto 50/50 Club

We are so grateful for your support and we hope you feel able to keep contributing in this way.

As the office is currently not staffed and we are shifting our ways of working, we will be unable to process the lotto on a monthly basis.  When normality returns, however, we will do a succession of draws for every month missed to catch up and distribute prize funds accordingly.

We also appreciate that financial times are potentially difficult for many of us, so if you wish to discontinue your subscription please cancel your standing order/direct debit with your bank or via Paypal.

If you are not part of Little Lotto already you might want to consider joining us as a way of supporting what we do especially in these difficult times.

Coronavirus – Covid-19 | Ups and Downs Southwest https://www.upsanddowns.net/coronavirus-covid-19-ups-and-downs-southwest/ Wed, 25 Mar 2020 08:01:03 +0000 https://www.upsanddowns.net/?p=18039

COVID – 19: Our Response

In light of the current situation, we would like to outline our plans to ensure that you remain supported and connected during this unusual time.

Requesting Support or Seeking Advice?

Our entire staff team are all working from home and are still able to offer you a high level of support. The only thing we cannot offer for your own protection and ours is a face to face visit. From support with form filling to information and advice, we are all here to support you.

You can still call the office on 01278 691100 and your call with be diverted to a member of the team who will ensure you are then contacted by the relevant worker.

You can email any member of the team; all details can be found below.

If you have recently had a baby with a Down Syndrome diagnosis or prenatal diagnosis, please reach out to us. We are very much available to support you, albeit remotely, through the early stages with your baby.

For Parents/Carers

We acknowledge that telephone and email are not quite the same, so we are also offering a virtual face-to-face platform via Zoom. This is a similar platform to Skype so as long as you have access to a device with a camera and microphone such as a mobile phone, tablet or PC, we can arrange a face-to-face chat which can be up to 40 minutes. If you request this option, the relevant worker will send you an invitation via a link whereby you will just need to follow the Zoom instructions to activate.

Our Family Support Team will also be reaching out personally to all families who are registered with us to catch up, see how you are doing and offer any additional support, advice and information.

Youth Club Provision

Due to the current restrictions, our youth club sessions are cancelled until further notice. We are however working on setting up virtual sessions via Zoom that will be hosted by our Youth Club leaders. These sessions are again limited to 40 minutes and will take place on the normal night of the youth club sessions. All children and young people who currently attend will be notified via their parents/carers on how to access these sessions. We hope this provides a useful platform for our children and young people to stay connected during this period.

The Bristol Office

Due to the current situation, it has been necessary to postpone the opening of our Bristol office until further notice. However, we are still very much available for families in Bristol who have a child with Down Syndrome; our current staff team will be able to offer support as explained above. Even if you are not registered with us yet, do get in touch and we can offer information, advice and support.

Schools

We are aware that schools remain open for pupils who have an EHCP. Two members of the team are qualified SEN teachers, so if you are a teacher or parent looking for information or advice, please contact either Jacqueline Sims or Sue Anderson (details below).

Advice and Support Not Related to Down Syndrome

During this challenging time, you and your family may be experiencing additional pressures or issues; our team have a wealth of information at their fingertips and are more than happy to help with research and signposting.  From finances to well-being, domestic abuse, debt or housing – just drop us a line and we will be more than happy to help. If you are seeking discreet support in relation to domestic abuse, you can call or email us and ask to “speak to Angela for some Down Syndrome advice”; we will know you are reaching out for help and find a way to communicate with you that does not increase your risk.

Useful Resources

We are keeping a very careful eye out for useful resources to support you and your child or young person during this time as well as developing some of our own. We will post anything of interest here on our website and on our social media platforms. Do follow us on Facebook and Twitter for regular updates.

Please be assured that we will remain proactive in our approach and available for children, parents and professionals during this period.

“Do your thing” on World Down Syndrome Awareness Day

World Down Syndrome 2020 - Ups and Downs Southwest

Ups and Downs Southwest are proud to present our latest contribution to the WDSD 2020 “We decide” campaign raising awareness that people with Down Syndrome should have equal opportunities to decide how they live their lives.

Using the uplifting song “Do your thing”, from the Basement Jaxx, our video showcases the amazing talents of our young people from Special Olympic skiers to medal winning swimmers, dancers and more. We hope the film inspires the viewer.

This project has been generously supported with donations from Foot Anstey, Somerset Masonic Knights Templars and our amazing fundraisers. Thank you for your support.
