If you are a prospective parent who has just been told that you are either in a high risk category for having a baby with DS or that you are in fact carrying a baby with DS, and you are struggling with the mass of emotions and turmoil involved in coming to decisions about what to do, we hope you will feel able to come to us for information.
We are more than happy to provide you with completely open and honest information about Down Syndrome as a condition, and the experiences of families and parents. Let us assure you that you are NOT the only person to have come to us, to find out more before making your decisions. We would welcome your enquiries and support you in any way we can during this difficult time. If you require information to make decisions around keeping your baby, termination, or giving a baby up for adoption, then be assured that our support will be provided to you with understanding and empathy. Equally, if you would like to just chat with someone who can tell you how it feels having a child with Down Syndrome, and with whom you can talk through your concerns, then we're here for you!!
As an organisation we seek only to ensure that these kind of life changing decisions are made as informed decisions and based on up to date and honest information provided by people who have the experience and knowledge to be able to provide it.
We work co-operatively with hospitals to provide training and information to midwives and paediatric registrars and also have up to date literature on the various antenatal tests available to pass on to concerned parents.
Please give us a call on 01278 691100 and ask to speak to either Wendy Hellowell or Sharon Williams or email us on info_upsanddownssw.org and we will endeavour to answer any questions you might have.
As an organisation we suggest that a chat with someone who understands your concerns and fears can be MUCH more constructive and helpful to you than looking up all sorts of information about Down Syndrome on the internet, much of which may have no bearing on your individual child at all!
Please! Pick up that
phone - and give us a call!
If you find the idea of telephoning too daunting then click the link below, where there are a selection of quotes from families in our group, on their feelings and experiences of having a child who has Down Syndrome. The children concerned vary enormously in their age, ability and character, in an effort to provide you with a good cross section and variety of experiences. - Drop us an email or give us a call when you're ready.
